Now is a great opportunity to join the Society of Professional Journalists and SPJ Georgia!

Collegiate Pro pix 1If you are a Georgia college student majoring or working in journalism, SPJ Georgia has a great opportunity to enhance your networking skills, gain new skills in the industry, connect with working journalists and promote yourself on a professional journalism website. SPJ Georgia wants you to succeed, and as professional journalists, we will be there for you along the way.

Benefits of joining SPJ Georgia as a Collegiate Pro:

  • Join before September 15, 2105, and automatically become a SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pro for FREE and without most of the requirements listed below. Again, September 15, 2015, is the deadline to be a Founding SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pro.

  • Voting rights as a professional journalist within all SPJ Georgia chapter elections. May represent SPJ Georgia as a delegate for the annual SPJ National Convention; invitations to all professional events and contests; emails blasts

  • Eligibility to become a collegiate pro (student) member of the SPJ Georgia board of directors for one or two year term

  • Access to all SPJ Georgia membership pros … and professionals have access to SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pros (internships, recommendations, introductions, media mixes)

  • SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pros seniors will post their resume, portfolio page, LinkedIn and other information directly on the SPJ Georgia website, spjgeorgia.com for the “Cream of the Crop” listing of upcoming journalism graduates for job recruitment

  • SPJGA Collegiate Pros will have priority to receive assignments or submit articles or multimedia work for SpeachJ News, the ongoing online news page for Georgia journalists.

  • SPJGA Collegiate Pros are eligible for SPJ Georgia Kenney Scholarships to help students attend or travel to SPJ Georgia events; national events

  • A SPJGA Collegiate Pro will be listed as a professional on the SPJ National member list; therefore, may be eligible to write for state, national blogs and Quill magazine.

  • Eligibility to become a summer intern for SPJ Georgia

  • SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pros will develop their own Facebook page to interact with other collegiate pros throughout the state and nationally

  • SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pros may become members of any SPJ Georgia committee

  • All SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pros will be spotlighted at least once on SpeachJ News during their college academic career

How do you become a SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pro?

To become a SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pro:

  • *You must be or will soon become a SPJ student member. (http://spj.org/join.asp) You may have joined as part of a student chapter or as an individual. You may have remembered paying $37.50 for an annual membership. All SPJ members, including those who are members of SPJ Georgia, pay national members dues.

  • There is a $10 dues per year to become a SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pro to be paid through the SPJ Georgia PayPal account. (SPJ National cannot take care of this process)

  • Submit a SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pro application along with:

    • Links of three articles published online or submit three links to audio or video broadcast work. Please supply links to all publications or broadcasts. We do not accept hard copies or reels.

    • Submit a letter of recommendation from a professor or employer or someone in the journalism field

    • Submit a 25-word essay on why you would like to become a SPJ Georgia Collegiate Pro

    • A professional head shot of yourself

  • *Send a required signed letter – snail mail (once approved as collegiate pro, it will be supplied to you) to SPJ National that will transfer your student membership to a professional membership in Georgia. The SPJ National bylaws allow for a student to become a professional member but still hold the dues at student prices and eligibility for student scholarships.
